Name: Robert Vowles – painting as LeMare

Location: Born in Somerset England and now living on the edge of the Somerset Levels.

Subject of choice: The Artist has been painting the wildlife and more recently landscapes, reflecting the beauty and diversity of the natural world.

Medium of choice: Originally working in watercolour and gouache he now paints almost exclusively in oils. Over the years his work has appeared in private and corporate collections, but not in large numbers as painting took second place to his professional life. Now retired, it has become his primary occupation.

What inspires you? The Somerset Levels and surrounding areas provide a rich environment for wildlife and beautiful landscapes. In addition, holidays have often inspired works of more urban landscapes such as the cafes and markets of Nice, Paris and Florence.

A recent diversification into ceramics has resulted in the production of the 'Whimsy' or 'Wims' Bird, a homage to the Martin Brothers Victorian Potters bizarre 'Wally' birds, with whom the artist has had a lifelong fascination.

Do you have any artistic ambitions that you are working towards? The artist intends a series of paintings depicting the wide variety of bird life that is to be seen through the seasons on the Somerset Levels.
